Lucent Technologies announced the availability of Phase Two of DEFINITY IP Phone System Solutions, bringing customers Voice over IP to the desktop via Lucent's industry-leading DEFINITY business communications servers, and further extending Lucent's support for business applications over packet networks.
Together with Lucent's world-class and market-leading messaging, mobility and customer relationship management (CRM) applications, Lucent's robust IP Phone System capabilities provide a full set of communication options to help businesses improve efficiency and lower costs while evolving to meet the demands of e-business. DEFINITY IP Phone System Solutions joins a number of products Lucent has developed to help businesses enhance their networks to take advantage of IP applications, including IP Exchange Systems, Intuity Voice Messaging, Cajun Campus LAN Solutions, CentreVu Internet Solutions and CentreVu IP Agent.

This latest addition to the DEFINITY portfolio reinforces the company's commitment to communication choices, providing enterprises with the flexibility of moving voice, video and data traffic over the Internet, intranets, extranets, public-switched networks and ATM.
DEFINITY IP Phone System Solutions is available as an easy upgrade for existing systems and is available for all new DEFINITY Enterprise Communications Server (ECS) and DEFINITY ProLogix Solutions servers. Lucent is demonstrating DEFINITY IP Solutions across its DEFINITY product portfolio here at VoiceCon2000.
DEFINITY IP Phone System Solutions operates both as an IP gateway and gatekeeper. As a gateway, it converts voice traffic to IP packets for reliable transmission over a LAN or the Internet. Its Quality of Service capability monitors the performance of the IP network. If at any time the IP network's performance is not acceptable for voice or fax calls, DEFINITY IP Solutions will reroute the call over an alternative network.
As a gatekeeper, DEFINITY IP Solutions demonstrates Lucent's leadership in support of industry standards by providing H.323 multimedia endpoints with secure access to the DEFINITY server. These endpoints allow users to connect their PCs to a switched-ethernet LAN and use them as IP "soft" phones. Soft phones provide DEFINITY's full range of telephony functionality. Familiar capabilities include hold, call forward, transfer, speed-dial and conference, as well as multiple call appearances and call displays.
Lucent is also supporting key VoIP growth applications for "road warriors" and other remote users by allowing them to connect their laptops into any network, anywhere. They can log into their home DEFINITY Phone system, and have all the features -- including uniform dialing and messaging -- that they would have if they were at the main office. Security is enforced through an encryption-based authentication login procedure based on Lucent's Applications Security Gateway algorithms.
The power of DEFINITY IP Solutions coupled with DEFINITY Anywhere gives the end user a complete multimedia desktop today that enables simultaneous voice and data collaboration. This also extends the user's options as to how they choose to interface with the DEFINITY enterprise server through either a choice of client application or browser based application.
DEFINITY IP Phone System Solutions works on DEFINITY Release 8.2, also available today, to provide enhanced call center, messaging, remote access and Q-Signaling (Q-Sig) capabilities. The new hardware and software make Lucent's industry-leading DEFINITY servers ideal solutions for meeting the changing demands of the marketplace.
DEFINITY IP Solutions and DEFINITY Release 8.2 are both open, standards-based applications that support industry-standard application programming interfaces, including TAPI, TSAPI and JTAPI. Many third-party applications have already been written for the platform.
DEFINITY IP Phone System Solutions and Release 8.2 are available now in the United States, with availability in other countries scheduled for later in the first half of the year. DEFINITY IP Phone System Solutions to the desktop will also be available on the award-winning, NT(a)-based DEFINITY OneT system in the United States in June.
